The St. Bart's Men's Group is a discussion and prayer group, about 25 years old.
We are a group of about 10 older men from different parishes who meet at one of the member's homes from 9:00 am to 10:30 am on the first and third Saturday mornings of each month. We have lay, religious and priest members. Most members feel a commitment to attend regularly. The host determines the subject of the meeting and prepares a few remarks to open a discussion of it. The host also prepares coffee, juice and pastries for a typical group of 6 to 8 people. The host solicits a volunteer to host the next meeting.
The group has no structure and no leader. We rely heavily on the presence and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Formal prayers usually open and/or close the meeting; otherwise, it is a members-sharing meeting. By intent, the sharing is intimate—usually focused on personal experiences in dealing with family, community, social and spiritual matters. One's relations with his adult children, the Church, his community members and his siblings are frequent matters of discussion. Dealing with aging and/or aloneness in oneself or close family members is also discussed.
