Grade 2

TEACHER: Kerry Madden (kmadden@stbartholomew.org or Ext. 22)

The second grade is a very exciting year where the students continue to develop both their academic and social skills. Second grade is a self-contained classroom where the major subjects of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Religion, Science, and Social Studies are taught and learned together.

Homework: Homework will be assigned every Monday-Thursday. (Subject to change due to holidays and days off.)

  • A newsletter and homework sheet will be sent home at the beginning of the week in the green folder.
  • The newsletter will include the spelling words and any reminders or announcements.
  • The homework sheet will list the assignments for each night.
  • Please review your child's folder every night!
  • Papers in the "Keep at Home" side should be taken out daily. They often include important information from the school, and work that your child has completed.
  • The green folder needs to return to school every morning.
  • Please provide a quiet, neat space, and a specific time (as much as possible) for your child to complete his/her homework each night. This consistency will contribute to good study habits and great success for your child.

Rules

1. Listen carefully and follow directions
2. Work quietly
3. Be kind to others
4. Respect people and their property
5. Work and play safely

To encourage students to follow these classroom rules, appropriate behavior will be recognized with praise, stars, surprises, and celebrations. However, if a student chooses to break a rule, the following steps will be taken:

  • First time a student breaks a rule: Warning
  • Second time: Lose five minutes of recess
  • Third time: Lunch with teacher
  • Fourth time: Call parents and notify principal
  • Fifth time: Send to principal

Individual weekly evaluations will be sent home noting student’s work habits, class work and homework completion. These reports are to be signed by parents and returned to school at the beginning of each week.
