Physical Education

TEACHER: Mr. Frank Miller (bobcatsmail2003@yahoo.com or Ext 31)

Physical Education is very important to a child’s growth. My goal is to help children find a variety of ways to enjoy being physically active so that they will be able to get all of the physical, emotional, intellectual and social benefits that come to someone who is physically active. Each day we will be focusing on different skills, sports, and games to foster an active and positive environment. Each child (except Kinders) will take the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.

Children are at different developmental levels, with a variety of needs and interests. For this reason, ALL of the children are provided with experiences that are both beneficial and enjoyable. Each lesson is also adjusted to take into account the wide range of skill and fitness levels that characterizes children at this age level.

For 1st graders and above, on PE days, it is recommended that a water bottle be sent with them to school to ensure proper hydration before, during and after PE.

Objectives:

  • To improve general motor skills
  • To establish a current fitness base and improve on it.
  • To establish and improve skill levels in a variety of sports such as hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, etc.
  • To continue to have 100% participation for grades 1-8 in the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.
  • To maintain a positive attitude and have fun while becoming physically fit through sports and games.

Grade requirements:

  • PARTICIPATION - each student must participate in every class and activity unless other arrangements have been made.
  • EFFORT - required of all students in order for something productive and positive to be achieved in each class.
  • SPORTSMANSHIP - fairness and encouragement must be present at all times during class.
  • UNIFORM - the proper uniform must be worn everyday to gym class (including ½ days). The proper uniform consists of: sneakers, St. Bartholomew School gym shorts with logo, white t-shirt with logo and white socks. Check the uniform handbook for the winter option which differs by grade. If a child does not have all of the components of a proper uniform the following consequences will occur:
    • The first time-a verbal warning will be given, a uniform slip will be sent home and an in class writing assignment may be required.
    • The second time- a note (pink slip) will be sent home. A writing assignment may also be required. If a uniform violation occurs twice in one quarter, the student’s P.E. grade will be reduced one letter grade (i.e. from “E” to “G”)
    • After the second time, a pink slip will be given each time a uniform violation occurs. If a uniform violation occurs six times in a quarter, the students’ grade will be further reduced.

If you are uncertain if your child will be having P.E. due to a special schedule, please ensure that they have their complete gym uniform. Better to be safe!
