Bereavement

The Risen Christ in our midst is the “firstborn of the dead” (Col 1:18).

Through the light of his Resurrection, St. Bartholomew parishioners can offer their hope and care for those who grieve the loss of a loved one.

Parishioners are encouraged to call a parish priest first when a family member has died, even before the funeral director or cemetery manager. The priests can offer the consolation of the Church, and guidance on the Funeral Mass and burial in the sacred grounds of a cemetery. Visitations in the Church are welcome at St. Bartholomew. The Rectory staff can help you coordinate the Funeral readings, music, and hospitality after the burial.

The Arimatheans are a group of caring parishioners who volunteer their time to serve Mass at a Funeral or Memorial Service of a deceased parishioner. Currently there are about 6 participants. Training is available.  Please contact Bill Ayers, 301-469-8023 or [email protected]

Parishioners who would like to participate in the St. Bartholomew Arimathean ministry can help by:

-attending the Vigil, Funeral and Burial on behalf of the parish community

-praying for the deceased and their loved ones

-serving as ushers and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Funerals

-preparing, coordinating, and serving meals after the Funeral Mass and burial

-following up with bereaved family members, especially during the first year
